Wednesdays 3, 10, 17 and 24 March

Four weeks of free educational classes on the history, art, culture and economy of the former Soviet sphere of influence.

Wednesday 17 March: Art Under Communism.

During the period 1917 to 1945 artists, and subsequently the state, attempted to define the political role of art.  Dr Mike O’Mahoney of the History of Art Department at the University of Bristol traces this fascinating trajectory through the rise and fall of the Soviet avant-garde to the emergence of Socialist Realism - “intrinsically an art of the past, present and future.”

Nottingham Contemporary's programme of talks and discussions is jointly supported by The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University.
